Optical vs mechanical mouse switches
Optical switches physically cannot develop double click chatter. That one difference decides whether a mouse can fail the most common way mice fail.
There is one difference between these two that matters more than everything else combined: a mechanical switch can develop double click chatter and an optical switch cannot. Chatter is how most mice die, so this single property decides whether your mouse has that failure mode at all.
How each one works
A mechanical switch closes a circuit by bringing two metal contacts together. When they meet they bounce, for a fraction of a millisecond, exactly like a dropped coin settling. Every mouse has firmware that ignores that bounce, waiting a fixed window after first contact and treating anything inside it as part of the same click.
An optical switch interrupts a beam of infrared light. Pressing the button moves a shutter through the beam, and the sensor registers the interruption. Nothing physical touches, so there is nothing to bounce.
Why mechanical switches start double clicking
As a mechanical switch is used, the contact surfaces oxidise and deform. The bounce lasts progressively longer. Eventually it lasts longer than the debounce window, and the firmware stops recognising it as bounce and reports a second click you never made.
This is why chatter appears gradually, gets worse, and never recovers on its own. It is also why contact cleaner buys a few months: it clears oxidation but does nothing about the physical deformation.
Optical switches have no contact surface to degrade, which is why they are usually rated to 60 or 70 million clicks against 20 to 50 million for mechanical ones.

The middle column is the important one. If someone with an optical mouse is told to replace the switch, they will spend money and time on the wrong thing, because the failure they have cannot be a switch bounce.
The same product line, different answers
The Razer DeathAdder is the clearest example. The DeathAdder Elite from 2016 uses mechanical Razer-Omron switches rated to 50 million clicks, and chatter on it is one of the most reported faults on Razer’s own support forum. The DeathAdder V2 moved to optical switches rated to 70 million, and that failure mode disappeared.
Same shape, same sensor lineage, same name. Completely different answer to “why is my mouse double clicking”.
Which should you buy?
If you have replaced a mouse because of chatter, optical removes that specific risk entirely and is worth choosing on that basis alone.
If you care about how a click feels, mechanical still has a following for good reason, and the enthusiast market is almost entirely mechanical. A good mechanical switch has a crisper break than most optical implementations. You are accepting a known failure mode in exchange.
One practical note: mechanical switches can be replaced, including with a different model for a different feel, if you can solder. Optical switch assemblies generally cannot be swapped the same way, so a fault there is less repairable even though it is less likely.

Are optical switches always better?
For durability and chatter immunity, yes. For feel, it is a matter of taste: many people prefer the crisper tactile snap of a good mechanical switch, and the enthusiast market still overwhelmingly uses mechanical switches for that reason. Optical switches also cannot be swapped for a different feel the way mechanical ones can.
How long do mechanical mouse switches last?
They are rated in clicks rather than years, commonly 20 to 50 million. In practice chatter appears well before the rating is reached, because the rating measures when the switch stops working rather than when it starts bouncing. Two to four years of regular use is typical.
Can an optical mouse still double click?
Yes, but not from switch wear. The usual causes are the operating system double click speed being set too slow, a macro or binding in the manufacturer software, or a failing cable producing intermittent contact. None of these are fixed by replacing a switch.
Do optical switches feel different?
Slightly. Early implementations were criticised for a mushier actuation, though newer ones are much closer to mechanical. The actuation point is often marginally different, which some people notice immediately and others never do.
How do I find out which my mouse uses?
Check the manufacturer's specification page, which usually states it plainly because optical switches are a selling point. A rating of 60 million clicks or higher almost always indicates optical; 20 to 50 million indicates mechanical.
