How long do mouse switches last?
Ratings are given in millions of clicks, but chatter arrives long before the rating does. Here is what the numbers actually predict.
Switch ratings are printed in millions of clicks, and people reasonably assume that is how long the mouse will last. In practice chatter arrives well before the rated count, for a reason worth understanding.
What the rating actually measures
A rating of 20 million clicks means the switch will still actuate after 20 million presses. It does not mean the switch will behave correctly until then.
Chatter is not the switch failing to work. It is the switch working badly: the contacts have oxidised and deformed enough that the bounce lasts longer than the firmware’s debounce window, so a single press reports as two. The switch is still actuating perfectly. It is just actuating twice.
That degradation begins from first use and worsens gradually, which is why chatter appears intermittently long before anything reaches end of life.

The optical row is different in kind rather than degree. Those switches interrupt a light beam instead of closing contacts, so there is no contact surface to oxidise and the chatter failure mode does not exist for them at all.
What that means in time
Ordinary desktop use runs somewhere around 5,000 to 10,000 clicks a day. Gaming, especially anything with rapid clicking, multiplies that substantially.
At 10,000 clicks a day, a 20 million rated switch reaches its number in roughly five years. Chatter typically shows up at two to four years of regular use, which fits: it arrives at a fraction of the rated count.
The left button almost always goes first, because it takes the overwhelming majority of clicks.
What actually affects lifespan
Click volume, obviously, and it is the dominant factor.
Environment. Dust and humidity accelerate oxidation on the contact surface. A mouse in a dusty room ages faster than the click count alone predicts.
Switch quality and authenticity. Counterfeit Omron switches are common in the replacement market and fail far earlier than genuine ones. This matters if you are buying replacements.
Not how hard you click. The contacts travel the same distance regardless of force, so a heavy hand does not meaningfully accelerate wear.
What to do about it
Do not replace preventatively. You would be doing a soldering job on something that works, and switches vary enough that yours may outlast the rest of the mouse.
Do test occasionally if you have had the mouse more than two years. Chatter starts intermittently, and catching it early means you find out before it ruins a drag operation at a bad moment.
Do check the warranty as soon as it appears. Most gaming mice carry two years and chatter is widely accepted as a defect. That window overlaps meaningfully with when chatter typically starts.
Consider optical when you next buy, if you have already replaced a mouse for this reason. It removes this specific failure mode rather than postponing it.

Because the rating measures when the switch stops working, not when it starts bouncing. Chatter is a degradation of contact quality that appears well before the mechanical end of life. A switch can chatter unusably at a fraction of its rated count and still technically actuate.
