Why does my mouse cursor jump or stutter?

Erratic cursor movement is a sensor or surface problem, not a button one. Here is how to separate the surface from the hardware.

Cursor problems and button problems are different faults with different causes, and the tools that check buttons will not find this one. If clicks are clean and the pointer still misbehaves, the sensor, the surface or the connection is at fault.

Start with the surface

This is the most common cause and the cheapest to rule out.

Optical sensors work by taking thousands of photographs of the surface per second and comparing them to detect movement. They need visible texture to track. Surfaces that defeat them:

  • Glass, which has almost no texture at all
  • High gloss or mirrored finishes, which reflect rather than scatter
  • Very dark, uniform surfaces, which return too little light
  • Repeating patterns at the wrong scale, which the sensor can misread as movement
  • Transparent or reflective mousepads past their best

Test it properly: put a sheet of plain paper under the mouse and see whether the problem disappears. That takes ten seconds and settles the question.

While you are there, check the sensor lens for dust, hair or a smear. A partially blocked sensor produces exactly this symptom and is easy to miss.

Also check the PTFE feet. Worn or missing feet change the distance between sensor and surface, which is enough to degrade tracking on some mice.

Then the connection

Wired. Flex the cable gently near the mouse body while moving the pointer. Movement that stutters in sync with the flexing means a failing strain relief. Try a different USB port directly on the machine rather than a hub.

Wireless. This is where the surprising cause lives: USB 3 ports emit interference in the 2.4GHz band, which is exactly where most wireless mice operate. A receiver plugged in next to a USB 3 device is a genuinely common cause of stuttering, and moving it to a different port or onto a short extension cable resolves it.

Also check the battery. Low voltage produces erratic behaviour well before the mouse stops working, so replace or charge before concluding anything.

Distance and obstruction matter too. A receiver at the back of a desktop tower, with the case between it and the mouse, is a worse position than it looks.

Then software

Pointer acceleration makes the same physical movement produce different cursor distances depending on speed. People often describe that as jumping. Turning off enhanced pointer precision in your mouse settings gives consistent one-to-one movement.

Polling rate against system load. A mouse reporting at 1000Hz on a system that is struggling can produce stuttering. Dropping to 500Hz is a reasonable test, and the difference is imperceptible in normal use.

Screen recording, remote desktop and overlay software all intercept cursor movement. If the problem appears only when one of those is running, you have your answer.

A second pointing device. A laptop trackpad registering a palm while you use a mouse produces cursor jumps that look like a mouse fault. Disable the trackpad and test again.

When it is the sensor

If the surface is fine, the connection is fine, another machine behaves the same way, and no software is intercepting, the sensor itself may be failing.

This is much rarer than the causes above. Sensors have no moving parts and do not wear the way switches do. Physical damage from a drop, or debris that has got inside the sensor housing rather than onto the lens, are the realistic possibilities, and neither is economically repairable on most mice.

Common questions

Why does my mouse hate my glass desk?

Optical sensors work by photographing the surface and comparing frames to detect movement. Glass has almost no visible texture, so there is nothing to track. Some sensors handle glass specifically, and everything else needs a mousepad or any opaque surface.

Would a better mousepad fix this?

For surface-related tracking, yes, and it is the cheapest thing to try. Any opaque, matte, non-repeating surface works. A sheet of paper is a perfectly valid diagnostic test before spending anything.

My wireless mouse stutters but the wired one does not.

That points at the wireless link. Move the receiver to a front USB port or use an extension cable to get it closer, keep it away from USB 3 ports which emit interference in the 2.4GHz band, and check the battery. USB 3 interference is a genuinely common and rarely suspected cause.

The cursor jumps when I lift the mouse.

That is lift-off distance working as designed, though it can be set too high. Many gaming mice let you adjust it in their software. If it jumps far on a small lift, lower the setting.

Could this be software rather than hardware?

Yes. Pointer acceleration, a high polling rate on an overloaded system, and screen recording or remote desktop software all produce erratic cursor movement. If it happens on one machine and not another with the same mouse, the machine is the variable.
