How to fix controller stick drift
Drift is a worn potentiometer, not a software bug. Here is how to measure it, what actually fixes it, and when a replacement module is worth it.
Stick drift is your character walking on its own, your camera slowly panning, or a menu scrolling when you have not touched anything. It is mechanical wear, and the fix depends entirely on how far it has gone.
Confirm it is really drift
Put the controller on a flat surface, hands off, and run a drift measurement for a few seconds. What you want is the largest resting deflection on each axis.

Sample over several seconds rather than glancing at one reading. Early drift is intermittent, and a stick that looks centred can spike when the controller is nudged.
If the reading is clean but you still see drift in one game, the problem is that game’s deadzone setting rather than your hardware.
Things worth trying, cheapest first
Recalibrate
Both major consoles and Steam offer stick calibration. It takes a minute and occasionally resolves a mild offset. It will not fix a worn potentiometer, but it costs nothing and rules out a pure software offset.
Contact cleaner
This is the highest value repair and resolves a large share of cases, particularly on controllers under two years old where the cause is contamination rather than wear.
- Locate the two potentiometers at the base of the drifting stick. They are small square components on opposite sides of the stick housing, one per axis.
- Spray a short burst of electrical contact cleaner into the small opening in each.
- Rotate the stick through its full range 30 to 50 times to work the cleaner across the resistive track.
- Let it dry completely before reconnecting power.
On many controllers you can reach the potentiometers without fully disassembling the board, though most designs do require opening the shell.
Replace the stick module
If cleaning does not hold, the resistive track is physically worn and no amount of cleaning restores it. Replacement modules cost a few dollars. The job requires desoldering around 14 pins per module, which is real soldering work rather than a beginner job, and the usual advice is to practise on a dead board first.
Upgrade to hall effect
While you are replacing the module anyway, hall effect modules are drop-in compatible with most popular controllers. They sense a magnetic field rather than dragging a wiper across a track, so the wear mechanism that causes drift does not exist. They cost a little more and are worth it if you are already doing the work.
What to do first
Check the warranty before anything else. Drift within the warranty period is widely treated as a defect, and policies have become more generous following legal pressure in several regions. Opening the controller ends that option, so exhaust it first.
A drifting controller is still usable for most single player games by raising the deadzone. If you are waiting on a replacement or a part, that is the practical workaround.
Common questions
Does recalibrating fix drift?
Only briefly, and only mild drift. Recalibration tells the software to treat the stick's current resting position as centre. That masks a small offset but does nothing about a worn potentiometer producing unstable readings, and the drift returns as wear continues.
Will a bigger deadzone fix it?
It hides it. Increasing the deadzone makes the game ignore a larger area around centre, so mild drift stops registering. The cost is precision, because small deliberate movements get ignored too. It is a reasonable stopgap and not a fix.
Are hall effect sticks actually better?
For drift specifically, yes. Hall effect modules measure a magnetic field rather than using a physical wiper on a resistive track, so there is no contact surface to wear. They do not eliminate every failure mode, but they remove the one that causes almost all drift.
Why did my controller drift after only a few months?
Usually dust or debris rather than wear at that age. Sticks are open to the air by design and a single particle on the resistive track produces unstable readings. Contact cleaner resolves this case more often than not, which is why it is worth trying before assuming the module is worn out.
Is drift covered by warranty?
Often yes within the first year, and policies have loosened following regulatory pressure and class action settlements in several regions. Check the manufacturer's current policy before paying for a repair, and do not open the controller first since that ends the claim.
